Let’s paint a picture…
You’re putting in 80+ hours a week. You’re the first one on the job site, the last one to leave, and you’re still answering texts at 10pm. Everyone tells you, “Wow, you’re such a hard worker!”
Except your bank account hasn’t gotten the memo.
Sound familiar?
The Hamster Wheel Problem
One of my clients (let’s call him Joe) was living this life. He was hustling harder than anyone I knew. But when we sat down with his numbers, something was crystal clear:
Joe wasn’t broke because he wasn’t working hard enough.
Joe was broke because his pricing didn’t cover his overhead.
Every hour he worked harder without fixing his margins was just another lap on the hamster wheel.
Why Hustle Doesn’t equal Profit
Here’s the truth most business owners don’t want to hear:
- You can’t outwork bad pricing.
- You can’t out-hustle ignored overhead.
- You can’t “grind” your way into profitability if the math doesn’t add up.
Hustle gets you jobs. But profit keeps you in business.
The Simple Fix
You don’t need to stop working hard (let’s be honest, that’s not in your DNA). But you do need to work smarter:
- Check your prices. Do they really cover labor, materials, and overhead?
- Audit your overhead. Trucks, insurance, software, donuts, yes, all of it.
- Build in profit. Profit isn’t “extra.” It’s the oxygen your business breathes
A Quick Reality Check Exercise
Pick your last job. Write down:
- What you charged.
- What you spent on labor and materials.
- Your slice of overhead.
Now—what’s left?
👉 If it’s slim (or negative), you’re hustling without payoff.
From Hustle to Healthy
The good news? Once Joe adjusted his pricing, he didn’t need to pull 80-hour weeks just to survive. Same jobs, smarter pricing, actual profit.
It wasn’t about grinding harder. It was about building numbers that worked for him.
