Why Paying Yourself Is Non-Negotiable

Be honest: when money comes in, what’s the order of who gets paid?

  • The crew?
  • The suppliers?
  • The truck loan?
  • The coffee shop down the street?  (because, caffeine).
  • Netflix?  (because you need that background noise at 11pm when you’re still doing paperwork).

And then there’s you, the owner, the one who keeps this whole circus running. And somehow, your name doesn’t make the list.

You’re Not Alone (and You’re Not Crazy)

Almost every small business owner I know has skipped paying themselves at some point. Why? Because it feels “responsible.” You tell yourself: “If I can just keep everyone else happy, I’ll take care of me later.”

Except later rarely comes.

Even Howard Schultz, the guy who bought Starbucks in the 1980s, admits he wasn’t taking home much in the early days. But here’s the difference: he built a plan that ensured he would eventually get paid. He knew if he didn’t, Starbucks would collapse under the weight of his sacrifice.

Your business cannot survive long-term if you’re the lowest-paid person on your crew. Period.

Why Skipping Your Paycheck Hurts the Business

Not paying yourself isn’t “noble.” It’s dangerous. Here’s why:

  • Burnout: Working 70 hours a week for free isn’t sustainable.
  • Bad decisions: Panic makes you take jobs you shouldn’t just to cover bills.
  • False picture: If your prices don’t include your pay, you’ll always undercharge.

Think of it like oxygen masks on an airplane; you can’t help your crew if you’re gasping for air.

The Simple Fix: Pay Yourself First

I know, it feels impossible. But start small:

  1. Pick a percentage (even 2–5%).
  2. Every time you get paid, skim it off the top for yourself.
  3. Increase the percentage as your margins improve.

It’s not about draining the business. It’s about building the habit of valuing your work.

Stop Putting Yourself Last

At Crown Consulting, I see this every day: hardworking business owners who think they’re being “responsible” by sacrificing their paycheck. But when we restructure their numbers, suddenly they’re paying themselves and growing.
